blisters

BLISTERS

Unfortunately blisters are one of the most common injuries seen in sport. Occurring to around 33- 50% of the population

WHAT CAUSES THEM?

There is a common misconception that RUBBING causes blisters! But in fact it is more related to the shearing forces of soft tissue + bones inside our feet, rather than just the rubbing of our skin on shoes or socks.

HOW CAN WE PREVENT/TREAT THEM?

There is still no 100% cure to stopping blisters but we do know that by changing the following it can minimize the likelihood of blisters occurring;

  • Reducing pressure through our feet using deflective padding
  • Using tapes or dressings to protect the skin
  • Wearing two pairs of socks
  • Reducing the intensity or frequency of activity
  • Altering the biomechanics of our feet with Orthoses
  • Ensure shoes fit properly
  • Reducing skin moisture content with dry powders or antiperspirants

FOOT FACT:

Blisters occur to around 33- 50% people during sport. Its NOT just rubbing of the skin that causes blisters, it’s more to do with the movement of the soft tissue + bone inside of our feet that cause the initial shearing force that than lead to blisters!
