While headaches are common, the source of a headache can be many and varied. Basically, a headache can be the result of anything that has a stimulating effect on the pain receptors in the head or neck. This could include stress, muscular tension, jaw problems, infections, injury, medications, dehydration and eye problems. And these are just a few of the many possible causes!
Did you know that the source of your neck pain could also be your very own neck? Known as “Cervicogenic Headaches”, they are headaches that are the result of a dysfunction in the neck region. Not to be confused with the slightly different tension headache, which can be caused by stress and strain in the neck and/or shoulders.
Symptoms of Cervicogenic Headaches
- They generally occur on one side of the head – the corresponding side to the neck problem. However they may also be experienced at the back of the head, over the temples or above the eye/s.
- The pain may be mild to severe aching and may include associated neck pain.
- Onset may be gradual or sudden.
- May occur regularly or last for long periods – particularly if the associated neck dysfunction is unresolved.
- Is usually associated with tension in the neck, with limited movement.
- Is often aggravated by straining and movement of the neck, muscular tension or activities such as driving or typing.
