Dry Needling Explained

Have you ever wondered what dry needling is or whether it might be suitable for you?

According to Osteopath Nick Cannon, dry needling is a treatment technique used by health professionals to provide pain relief through selective targeting of tight bands of muscles, or ‘knots’, that can relieve trigger points that develop within muscle bellies.

Dry needling works by stopping the transmission of pain signals from our muscles to the brain, instead stimulating the release of pain-relieving chemicals. Dry needling is also thought to create local tissue inflammation which initiates a healing response through an increase in blood flow and
circulation to the injured area.

The needles used in dry needling are very fine, therefore shouldn’t cause much pain, however a twitch response is commonly seen from the muscle being needled. It is also common for the patient to experience an ache or heavy sensation following the dry needling treatment, which typically subsides within 24 hours, leaving the patient with improved movement and reduced muscle tension.

Our practitioners are highly skilled; therefore, risks are minimal but can include bruising/swelling, damage to viscera (including lungs and other
organ tissues). Our practitioners have all done additional courses in dry needling and are highly trained to negate these risks.

Dry needling can be useful in treating conditions such as headaches, low back pain, tennis elbow, shoulder injuries, hip injuries and calf strains. If this
sounds like you, why not book an appointment with one of our practitioners and see if dry needling can help you.
