Shockwave Therapy

Tendon Injuries And Tendinopathy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that involves the delivery of shock waves to injured soft tissue to decrease pain and stimulate healing. It can be used to treat a number of musculoskeletal conditions, and it is especially recommended for the treatment of chronic tendinopathies that haven’t responded to more-conservative treatments.

The shockwave handle-piece is placed on the surface of your skin. High-energy acoustic wave pulses are conducted to reach the injured area beneath. It is a strong, deep vibration and can cause some discomfort during the process. This level of discomfort can be controlled and will be kept at a tolerable level by your practitioner. It takes about 4 minutes and can reduce pain and inflammation from the 1st session. The shockwaves deliberately overstimulate the nerve endings in the area in order to reduce pain perception. Don’t be scared but it is quite noisy too.

Shockwave therapy is used to treat a range of injuries including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis and golfers elbow
  • Rotator cuff conditions
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • Shin splints
  • Gluteal tendinopathy
  • Arthritis

The number of sessions will vary depending on your injury, how long you have had it, and your pain severity, but an average of 3 to 8 sessions, 1 week apart is often required, along with adjunctive therapy. Whilst shockwave is affective in managing pain and promoting healing, it is important to know that it is used in conjunction with other treatment techniques including rehabilitation exercises.

Shockwave therapy can be applied by all of our practitioners including osteopaths, physiotherapists, podiatrists and remedial massage therapists.

If shockwave therapy is administered within an appointment there is no additional cost. However, we also offer shockwave only appointments which are shorter than a standard appointment and include no other treatment modalities. This appointment will cost $60 and is 15 minutes in duration. These appointments are only available to patients who are further along in their shockwave treatment plan.

We will be offering Shockwave Therapy at 13th Beach Health Services from Monday 13th March 2023.
