Oh my GORD!
Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease, or GORD, refers to the frequent or severe experience of reflux symptoms, such as heart burn. Individuals who have complications associated with reflux are also considered to have GORD.Symptoms occur when acid from the stomach leaks up into the oesophagus (food pipe). It commonly produces a distinct burning sensation in the chest, hence the term ‘heartburn’, and may also reach the throat.
GORD is generally caused by a weakening of the Lower Oesophageal Sphincter (LOS). This muscle works by relaxing to allow food to enter from the oesophagus into the stomach; and closing in order to prevent the contents of the stomach from rising back up.
GORD can be caused or exacerbated by a number issues, including obesity or being overweight, digestive issues, poor diet, consumption of aggravating substances (alcohol, rich/fatty/spicy foods), stress and pregnancy.
How can Osteopathy help?
Osteopathy can assist in the management of GORD – in association with your doctor’s guidance – by helping to loosen the muscles contributing to any postural tension. Through the releasing of postural tension, any additional pressure being placed on the stomach and surrounding area can be relieved. Thus, also easing the stress on the LOS.
